Strong Germans in Bydgozcz

Bydgoszcz, a regional centre with just over 300,000 inhabitants in northern Poland, provided the perfect backdrop for the 2026 Quadrathlon Sprint World Championships.
A well-organised middle-distance event in Central Europe, the Enea Bydgoszcz Triathlon has established itself as one of Poland’s flagship triathlon races. It has earned a reputation for outstanding organisation, enthusiastic crowds, and a spectacular city-centre course. With more than 5,000 participants across all race categories, Bydgoszcz is one of the largest triathlon events in Europe.
The race is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, attracting thousands of competitors ranging from first-time triathletes to seasoned elites. Excellent spectator access, together with live music and entertainment throughout the city, creates a unique festival atmosphere.
Against this impressive backdrop, the 2026 Quadrathlon Sprint World Championships were contested over an approximately 400 m river swim (150 m upstream, 250 m downstream), a 17 km bike leg, a 4 km paddle, and a 5 km run.
The swim took place in the crystal-clear waters of the River Brda, which flows through the heart of the city. Although the river current was relatively strong, the out-and-back course balanced the challenge of the upstream section with a fast downstream finish. The bike course was exceptionally fast and almost entirely straight, utilising the full width of one carriageway of a dual carriageway that had been completely closed to traffic for the event. The paddle continued along the River Brda through the city centre before the athletes finished with a scenic run along the riverbanks.

Competitors were greeted by ideal racing conditions, with temperatures of around 25°C, light winds, and slightly overcast skies that took the edge off the summer sun. Some athletes commented that it felt considerably warmer during the closing stages of the run, although that may have reflected the intensity of the racing.

A total of 37 men and 12 women competed for the world titles.

In the women’s race, Anna-Lena Klee took the lead during the swim and steadily extended her advantage throughout the race to claim the world title in 1:27:00, finishing a comfortable seven minutes ahead of Susanne Walter. Ellen Mielke secured third place to complete an all-German women’s podium.

The men’s race promised to be a closely contested affair, with many of the season’s top-performing quadrathlon athletes lining up alongside a strong contingent of local Polish competitors. The race began with a trickle start, with two athletes entering the water every eight seconds.
Ferenc Csima (HUN), the 2025 World Cup winner and 2026 Middle Distance World Champion, started alongside Alexander Dittrich (GER), runner-up over the middle distance in 2025. Twenty-four seconds later, Christian Dürr (GER) and Michael Faustmann (GER) began their race. Both had previously finished on World Cup podiums but were still seeking their first major international title. It soon became apparent that the battle for the medals would be fought among these four athletes.

Michael Faustmann emerged from the swim in first place, having erased the 24-second starting deficit to Csima. During the bike leg, Dürr bridged across to the leaders, leaving Dürr, Csima, and Faustmann separated by less than 20 seconds for much of the ride. Faustmann and Dürr entered the kayak transition together, with Csima only 15 seconds behind.
As expected, Csima once again demonstrated his exceptional paddling ability. A dominant kayak leg allowed him to start the final 5 km run with approximately a one-minute lead over Faustmann and around 90 seconds over Dürr.
Dürr, the strongest runner of the leading trio, quickly overtook Faustmann and steadily closed the gap to Csima. The race remained in doubt until the closing stages before Dürr completed the comeback to claim his first Quadrathlon Sprint World Championship title. He crossed the finish line just 17 seconds ahead of Faustmann, with Csima claiming the bronze medal a further 13 seconds behind.
