Nearly two hundred competitors took part in this year’s Gyékényes Triathlon and Quadrathlon event. The eXtremeMan Q61.5 race was this years middle-distance World Championships for quadrathletes, where athletes from five countries competed in Hungary’s clearest waters of Lake Gyékényes. Competitors swam 1.5 kilometres, cycled 40 kilometres, kayaked 10 kilometres and ran 10 kilometres in total 61,5.
The water was rather cold for the swimming with 17 degrees, so everybody was wearing Neo. The start was separated from the triathlon. Triathletes started only 30 min later so the bike course was empty for the quadrathletes. The four-lap course was flat on good quality asphalt and closed from traffic, so the best times were below 1 hour for the 40 km. During the kayak part stormy weather was approaching Gyékényes. First the wind was blowing heavily but the participants managed the 6 island laps on the lake without bigger troubles. On the running course the wind was blowing even heavier, and it started to rain to.
In the men’s race the last weeks first and second place winners in Kassel continued the battle also in Gyékényes for the first place. As in Kassel Csima can build up a big gap on the kayak course and keep most of it during the running course. Third place was secured by Hungarian Attila Kiss. In woman’s race there was a limited starting field. Susanne Walter won the race from Germany in front of Andrea Kovacova from Slovakia.
Next international race will be hold in the British Brigg. This time it will be the middle-distance European Championship. Several athletes already confirmed their participation so tight competition is expected.
