Only the tough ones at the EC in Kassel …

… but plenty of that. The European Quadrathlon Championships in Kassel presented the athletes with some unique challenges. With the water in the Fulda at just 13 degrees and an outside temperature of only 9 degrees at the start of the competition, cold fingers, feet and faces were a major concern. The low temperatures made the transitions between disciplines particularly difficult. Remarkably, the water was actually warmer than the air. As the day progressed, however, sunny weather ensured good conditions and a great atmosphere.

More than 80 boats lined the banks of the Fulda. The world’s top quadrathlon athletes were on the starting line in Kassel, delivering top-class sport. The organising team led by Bernd Scheller, ‘Hucky’ Brückmann and the numerous volunteers can be proud of an excellently organised competition. The fast, fully closed-off cycling route in particular received much praise from the participants.

The setting also made the event something special. The route led through the lively city atmosphere of Kassel, past parts of Documenta and across the site of the former Federal Horticultural Show. The varied running route was highlighted positively by many athletes.

In the men’s event, reigning world champion Ferenc Csima repeated his success from the previous year. His commanding kayaking performance laid the foundation for his victory. Michael Faustmann finished second, 49 seconds behind. Alexander Dittrich followed a further 27 seconds behind in third place. The battle for the podium places remained exciting right until the end.

In the women’s event too, reigning world champion Anna Zagórska dominated the race, leaving no doubt about her victory right up to the finish line. Anke Trilling and Katharina Vieth followed in second and third places respectively.

In the relay race, Team GER 1 from Rodenkirchen came out on top to secure the European Championship title. Second and third places went to WSV Lampertheim and the Team Koblenz / Wuppertal joint team.

Following a successful event, the participants were thoroughly satisfied. Many are already looking forward to competing again next year.
