Ibiza Quadrathlon opens the 2012 season

The first weekend of May saw the 2012 Quadrathlon season opening World Cup race on the Spanish Island of Ibiza. The race marked 25 years from Ibiza’s first Quadrathlon. The middle distance event was led by Spaniard Miquel Armengol Roca over the 1.5KM swim and 7KM kayak disciplines. Roca, from Barcelona, was kept within the sights of last year’s winner, Leos Rousavy from Czech Republic, who used his strength on the 40KM bike section to close the gap and take the lead and then held on for the win during the 10KM run. Roca came in second followed by fellow Spaniard Vincente Roig Riera, who took third.

In the ladies race, a close fought battle in the kayak between Salguero of Spain and Mielke of Germany, ultimately resulted in a race victory for María José Morell Salguero over second placed Ellen Mielke of Germany. Third placed lady was Silke Harenberg, also from Germany.

The next event on the World Cup circuit is 3rd June 2012 in Steinberg, Bavaria. It is a middle distance event covering 1.75km swim, 40km cycle, 8km kayak and 10km run.
